007: How to Face Spiritual Opposition and Win [Podcast]

Spiritual opposition is one of the most overlooked aspects of developing a platform.

This is far more than the resistance (see The War of Art) that Pressfield mentions and warns us to fight.  Sometimes we face more than just a battle within.

I imagine that nearly everyone reading this post wants to share their goodness with the word, to make some aspect of people’s lives better.  This momentum of ours will not go unopposed, so prepare for it.

There are times when the battle comes from the outside in the form of forces that don’t want us to succeed.

In this podcast I share with you the steps I take to prepare myself for anything that lies ahead.

Forms of Spiritual Opposition

  • Ennui — “Awww…do  we have to do that today?”
  • Agreements — “I did poorly on my public talk today; I must not be any good at this. God is not with me any longer.”
  • Blatant Attack — Things fall apart at the most inopportune time could be an attack.

Recently I was handed a campaign that was already underway.  A church is taking a large group to Israel for a trip.  Ticket prices start at $3698.

Background

Check out the image below which illustrates what typically happens as you send multiple emails as part of a campaign.

Open rates drop a little each time, and click through rates drop as well (hypothetical numbers shown to illustrate the point).

I picked up this campaign on the 3rd email.  Here is how the campaign was performing (real numbers).

Previous Campaign Performance

  • Email 1 open rate – 13%
  • Email 2 open rate – 11%.

Given this trend, and knowing that the 3rd email usually has a lower open rate than the second email, I knew I had to take a different approach.

Changes Made to Campaign

  • “From:” field now reads “Pastor John” rather than “Church Office”.
  • Used curiosity in the subject line — “Is this on your bucket list?”

As I mention in the podcast, I noticed the earlier versions of the email were addressed as having come from the church office.  Nothing wrong with this, but I took the liberty to change it to the pastor’s name.

I also took a different approach with the subject line.  I used “Is this on your bucket list?” in hopes of encouraging people to see what, exactly, was on the pastor’s bucket list.

Results

Using these 2 tactics worked!  See results in the next image.

The new approach yielded a 22% open rate — reversing the usual downward staircase — and added another 31 people to the list of interested parties.

These individuals essentially opted into a new list and will receive additional information about the trip.

Sometimes you don’t need a single ounce of technology to help you find new prospects for your work.

Instead, all you need is good, old-fashioned smile and dial.

  • No Facebook ads
  • No internet connection
  • Just a list and a telephone

In this episode I walk you through the steps I use to:

  • Find a deep well of people to contact for public speaking engagements
  • What to do if you struggle to find a deep well of your own.

Become an Expert Starting Right Now!

Become an Expert Starting Right Now!

If you find that you are wanting to get started in a business so that you can become an expert but you’re not quite sure where to get some traction, you are in great company.

The first place that a lot of people want to go in all of this is the question: “How do I make money at this when I have responsibilities like family, kids, and bills?”

I think this is the wrong question to ask here.

What happens, as I’ve noticed through conversation with others in this position, is that the person isn’t quite receptive to the answers. This is often the question that get answered internally, but not by somebody on the outside.

Unfortunately, answers from the outside are too easy to dismiss.

I could say to “Get up early” or “Stay up late.”

I could say “Use some time on your weekends”.

But, if none of those are options for you, it digs you further and further into a hole. In turn, you will leave the conversation feeling like you are never going to be able to make things work out so that you can become an expert.

Finding Your Passion

The answer here lies in how emotionally involved you are with the path you’re on.

[shareable cite=”Jason R. Owens”]When given the proper motivation, people find all kinds of ways to make things happen[/shareable]

The question we should be asking is: “How do you find something that will give you the necessary passion you need for your work?”

I use the term “passion” loosely because it is so overly used in today’s society.

I find what really moves the needle for people is beginning to believe that they can do it.

And really, you can. You can become an expert if you put all the right things into it.

When you find out what you have, no matter how small, that can lead you to a great position, you begin to understand that you can do this.

Do you have

  • The connections?
  • The network?
  • The tools?
  • The technology?
  • Whatever else you need to go out there and do it?

Great!

This is the single thing that makes people excited — believing in themselves and the fact that this is all very possible with the resources they have.

Getting Excited to Become an Expert

Here’s an exercise I want you to do that will hopefully be able to get you excited about your possibilities in the expert business.

[shareable cite=”Jason R. Owens”]Ask yourself, ‘What is it that I can do right now?'[/shareable]

Take out a sheet of paper and make a list of all the skills you currently have.

  • Can you design a website?
  • Can you create a lead magnet?
  • Can you put up squeeze page to collect email addresses?
  • Can you call someone at your local Rotary club to ask about scheduling you for a 20 minute talk next month’s meeting?

Taking a deep assessment of your skills will help you find plenty of things you can do today — things that will give you some forward momentum and help put yourself mentally in a state where you feel like you’re about to do something really well.

This momentum begins to change everything.

  • You will begin to see opportunity.
  • You will begin to see chances to do things that you haven’t seen before.
  • New connections will start the form in your mind.
  • You will start to see new possibilities.

Now, you’re on your way!

[reminder]What are the top 3 things you can do today (you already have the tools, the connections, etc.) to start moving forward in claiming your area of expertise?[/reminder]

Show Notes

In this episode you will hear:

  • The challenges I faced with managing my email list and contact database.
  • A step-by-step explanation on what I did to fix it.
  • The benefits I’m now experiencing as a result of this work

My List Clean Up Campaign

In the screen captures below you will see that I use the term “hygiene” in place of the words “clean up”.  These images come from my email marketing system, Infusionsoft, but you can use the same strategy in practically any email platform.

  1. The campaign starts when I apply a tag (think of this as a sticker) to a person’s file in my database.
  2. The contact then moves into the hygiene sequence that starts with the first email being sent.
  3. If a person who is reading my “Stay on my List” email clicks on a link, then I remove them from the Hygiene sequence so that they do not receive any more email reminders.
  4. I then tag the contact to start my new indoctrination sequence so that he/she can get reacquainted with what I do.

jason-owens-podcast-episode-3-clean-your-email-list-case-study

Inside the Hygiene Sequence

Once you click into the Hygiene Sequence you see the meat of the clean up effort.

  1. I send the first message where I remind people where we met and I ask them if they want to stay with me.
  2. I wait up to 2 days to give people time to read and respond.
  3. I send the second reminder email.
  4. I wait another 2 days to give people time to respond.
  5. If a person has lasted in the sequence this long, they have not clicked to stay with me and probably are not interested.  The person gets tagged as a Dead contact.
  6. I remove the In Need of Hygiene tag that started the clean up sequence.

  • At a networking event or MeetUp in and around Charlotte.
  • At a Rotary meeting where I spoke.
  • At a Craft Content Nashville where I spoke.
  • At the Entrepreneur Summit where I delivered a keynote.
  • Through the launch of Yellow Pad Sales Machine.

Either way, I’m just writing to reconnect and ask if you still want to stay connected?

I write marketing tips so authors, experts, and public speakers can…

  • Book more speaking engagements
  • Sell more products

I write a LOT on how people can leverage email marketing to make more money.

If you’d like to stay connected, all you have to do is click here or click the button.

(I put a button here so that people could click here)

You don’t need to do anything to unsubscribe.

You will automatically fall off my list at the end of the next 3 days unless you click on the link above to tell me that you want to stay.

If you have to go, I fully understand.

Again, you don’t need to do anything to unsubscribe.

If you choose to stay, I thank you profusely.

I look forward to sending more and more great targeted content to you over the next few weeks and months.

Take care,

Jason

7 Reasons Public Speakers Should Outsource Email Marketing

7 Reasons Public Speakers Should Outsource Email Marketing

If you would love to harness the power of email marketing for your speaking business, but don’t feel you have the time, there is hope!

Like other successful public speakers you want…

  • to get more speaking engagements
  • to sell more copies of your books
  • to enroll more clients in your online programs

…and you hear that other public speakers are crushing it with email marketing, but you haven’t gotten quite around to it for your speaking business.

Reasons Speakers Are NOT Yet Using Email Marketing

Here are reasons that public speakers are not using email marketing to feed a continual stream of new sales month after month.

1) You aren’t really certain how to get anyone to buy anything from you by email.

If you’ve never done anything more than the occasional newsletter, you may not have even turned your first dollar from email marketing.

Or if you get a few sales here and there, you are not certain how to do it again.

This can be maddeningly frustrating, and this is where most public speakers quit.

[callout]If you want to outsource your email marketing for just $27, click here to schedule a time  to get started.[/callout]

2) No Email List / Small List

This is far more common than you may realize.

I’ve worked with speakers who have been on the speaking trail for over 10 years yet barely have an email list of 50 people.

The good news is that this can be fixed quite easily, especially for those of you who are more senior in your speaking career.

3) Not Enough Time

You have a choice. You can either be on stage growing your brand, or you can be stuck in your office typing emails.

Being on stage wins every time!

4) Too Technical

To the uninitiated, the technical aspects of email marketing can be a little daunting.   Lists and sub-lists and html code and sequences and tagging…it can get a little overwhelming, especially if you are not using it every day.

5) Can’t come up with any good ideas

If your brain is not naturally wired for marketing (few are), you might feel you don’t have any good ideas, or that people simply won’t want to buy what you have the offer.

Outsourcing Your Email Marketing Gives You the Following Benefits

  1. It Works – Working with someone who stays up-to-date with what is working in email marketing right now.  You don’t get yesterday’s leftovers.
  2. Freedom from Tech Hassles – Someone who is technically literate and knows how to help you get the most out of your email marketing system (without your banging your head on the table in frustration).
  3. Make the Sale – Someone who understands copywriting and sales psychology can close the deal rather than let it get away.
  4. Speed to Market – Someone who can knit all the pieces together faster than you could by yourself.
  5. Focus – Delegating email marketing to a competent individual gives you the freedom to focus on what you do best.
  6. List Building – A good marketer can help you develop a very responsive list over time.
  7. Automatic Pilot – Once you figure out how to do this once, you can automate it!

A List-Building Technique That Will Blow Your Mind

A List-Building Technique That Will Blow Your Mind

Here is how you can build a great list and control your destiny.

Those of you who have been with me for any time at all know that I am always on the lookout for ways to help my readers grow their email subscriber base.

I’m writing to share yet one more success that we’ve had recently with a public speaker who used this one simple technique to great effect!

I’ve written about list-building by SMS previously because I heard about somebody in our community who was successful with it.

I was so intrigued with it that I had to try it with one of my clients, and it is working like a charm!

[callout]Get a full 7-page report that details precisely what you need to do to begin leveraging SMS to build your email list today.  Click now to get…

  • 3 Methods Anyone can Master
  • 10 Scripts to Boost the Number of New Subscribers

[/callout]

How List-Building By Text Works

You sign up for a service that provides you with:

  • A Keyword.
  • Digits to where people text your keyword.

You also get to personalize these two messages that are delivered by the SMS/text system:

  • The prompt where you encourage a person to subscribe.
  • Your welcome message.

Once the text system has the email from your new subscriber, it sends that email to your email marketing system so that it can auto-deliver your signup goodie right away.

List Building By Text Jason Owens

[shareable cite=”Jason R Owens”]You are crazy if you aren’t using this Oh-So-Easy technique to build your list.[/shareable]

How You Get People to Sign Up

Here are two ways that I’ve seen this used:

  1. The Active Technique. From the stage you say something to the effect of “Thanks for attending my talk today. I have a special piece of bonus content for you [guide, etc. that takes people deeper into your content]. Take out your smartphone now and text GIFT to 33444, and I’ll send this bonus to you right away.”
  2. The Passive Technique. Have the event promoter distribute your keyword and digits. Simply put your info on a business card, on a table tent, on a flyer in a goodie bag, or even list your info directly in the program.

Either one of these techniques are going to help you with enrolling new people to your list.

I have gone into great detail to describe even more techniques that you can use, including telling you 10 different scripts you can use (one of these techniques alone will nearly double your results) to get the best results.

Click here to get this article upgrade.

Results

A client of mine who recently used texting as a way to get people to join her list spoke in 2 different sessions during the day — one morning and one afternoon.

My client received a 36% opt-in rate across the two rooms! This is phenomenal!

Upgrade your reading experience now to learn how you, too, can get a massive influx of subscribers every time YOU speak!  It worked for my client.  Why couldn’t it work for you?

Why it Works

Not only is having somebody join by text a lot simpler and a lot easier, people feel like they are in a little bit more control.

The user experience is different than somebody asking you to add your name to sign up sheet.  This is more of an active strategy and people feel more involved in the process.

Plus, you get the extra push from social proof. If both of my neighbors pick up their phones and start signing up for your bonus, then…I better sign up for the bonus, too, because I don’t want to get left behind.

It doesn’t hurt that they get instant validation an instant feedback from you.

The way the system is set up is that the person ends up getting your goodies, or your freebie, sent directly to their inbox as soon as they register — instant gratification!

For those of you who are not using a technique like this in your list building arsenal, I highly recommend it!

[shareable cite=”Jason R. Owens”]You need to add List-Building-by-Text to your arsenal today![/shareable]

As I begin using this with more and more clients, I’m beginning to see that this technique is working across the board with

  • health practitioners
  • business coaches
  • public speakers
  • practically anyone who standing in front of a roomful of people in a position of authority.

How to Resurface After an Absence

How to Resurface After an Absence

My wife travels the public speaking circuit and usually gives 5-10 talks a year.  In the last few days of April she was on a trip with several of her public speaking colleagues.

Karen sends me a text explaining that one member of this group had accepted the head position at a non-profit, and that this lady was recruiting Karen to come to work for her.

This would certainly mean a relocation for us.

A few minutes later my wife sent me a follow up text with these exact words, “…NO NEED to worry…”

I knew from that very moment that I was in trouble.

Fast-forward 4 months.

  1. My wife accepted the new job.
  2. The five of us (three people and two dogs) are living in a hotel room 4 states away from our old home in NC.
  3. My daughter should start school next week provided we can convince the lady in the registration office that my daughter a) does exist, and b) that we really are our child’s parents.

I can truly say that this has been the busiest 4-month period of my life.

I was often very torn between my obligations to this move and the publishing schedule I know is so important to a content-driven business.

There are times when you simply can’t get to it all — my publishing had to give while I focused on our move.

[shareable cite=”Jason R Owens”]There are times when you simply can’t get to it all.[/shareable]

The Big Addition

Without a doubt the largest change I have made in my business this summer has been the addition of done-for-you services for authors and experts.

It was one of those whack-on-the-side-of-the-head moments when I realized that I understand how to put together a lot of the back office systems that deal with ads, campaigns, and other revenue-driving activities.

Not only do I understand it, I have also done all of it as part of running my own business.

So why not do it for other experts as well?

Look Forward to These Stories

As my life starts to take on a new normal I want to get back to a more routine publishing schedule.

I can’t wait to tell you about what I have learned over the summer, including:

  1. Lessons from partnering with an expert to launch a new workshop series.
  2. How a portable business, like what we experts run, is a huge bonus for our spouse’s upward mobility.
  3. A few new list-building tools that I have come across.

Thanks for your patience.

I can’t tell you how much it means that you stuck with me.

Summary

What I just did was illustrate the main points I want to share in case you have to go underground for a long absence.

  1. Explain where you have been.  Yes, many of your readers really do want to hear about the goings on in your life.  Things can’t always be all about business all the time.
  2. Share what is new.
  3. Tell people where you are headed. Give people a taste for what is on the horizon.

[reminder]If you were not able to keep a regular publication schedule, did you find that it affected your relationship with your followers?[/reminder]
